Things We Hide From the Light

Wow! Just, So Much Wow!

I am already addicted to Lucy Score’s books. There is never a question of whether I will read one or not. It’s as imperative in my life as my morning tea, meant to be savored and appreciated, sunk into together and enjoyed as their warmth envelopes you in a blanket of emotions.  And, man, did Things We Hide From the Light (TWHFTL) bring all the feels.

I was already hooked on Nash and Lina from TWNGO (Things We Never Got Over), book one in the Knockemout series, but wow, did I fall hard for them in book two. Their book. Their story. Their adventure. Their odyssey. Their HEA. It was so much more than a swoony small town sheriff meets and woos the bad@ss bossbish on a mission. It was overcoming demons, unpacking baggage, creating and rebuilding families, forging friendships, solving mysteries, and a whole lotta humor. So much humor. And steam. Nash and Lina are smoldery embers of incendiary resolve, until they finally give themselves, and each other, permission to stop dousing their fuse.

I loved this story so much, after reading it, I relived it through the audiobook. Lila Winters and Sebastian York bring Lina and Nash to life through perfect timing, inflection, and tone. And their ability to set a scene and mood with their voices, slipping seamlessly from one character to another, creates the perfect surround sound effect to truly paint a brilliant picture in the listener’s mind.

And after all of it was said and done, the bad guys and their evil schemes thwarted, the happy couple happily fallen into happy couple bliss, the thing that really got me was Lucy Score’s author’s note at the end of the book. This quote hit me hard. So hard. I cried at the author’s note!

The most important lesson Lina and Nash taught me is that the best kind of love is the one you are brave enough to give freely. Even knowing they could hurt you or disappoint you or break your heart , loving someone exactly as they are is the greatest gift you can ever give.”

Because how perfectly perfect, how absolutely spot-on is that? And it’s all there in TWHFTL. All beautifully written and constructed into a story that will steal your heart as it sends it racing, bring the chuckles, snickersnorts, and all-out spittakes, and finds a way into your heart to cue the tears right when someone else is watching you read. And it’s all freaking worth it.
