Q&A with Author D.D. Lorenzo

Sometimes a message drops into your DMs when you least expect it and it’s exactly what you need. Sometimes it’s an inspirational meme, or a hilarious gif or reel. But sometimes it’s just someone popping in to say: “Good morning, Beautiful! I hope you have an amazing week!” It’s simple. Just a good morning and a wish for a good week. But it’s so much more than that. Ten words, and suddenly you feel seen and valued. D.D. Lorenzo has been sending me little notes like that since we met. Not every day, but she seems to know exactly which days I need a little pick-me-up.

It’s just who D.D. is. She’s this beautiful, bright ray of sunshine. Trust me when I tell you just walking into her sphere can lighten your mood and make you feel like you’re exactly where you need to be, even if you had no idea where you were going. I value D.D. and her friendship so incredibly much.

But I wouldn’t even know D.D. if it weren’t for books and bookish events. When D.D. came to Charm City Romanticon 2023 to help author Samantha Cole, we got to chat and know each other. When she came as a signing author herself to Charm City Romanticon 2024 we got to know each other better. And when she shared pieces of her heart, soul, and life with readers through the CCR panels in 2024, we all held our breaths but not our tears. And we couldn’t hug her fast enough.

D.D.’s backlist is growing steadily after she took time off writing for a few years following a personal tragedy. Read on to learn more about her, then go grab her backlist and dive right in.

How did you get started writing?

I’ve always loved words, and fell in love with story time in school when I was in first grade. That was where I penned my first story: “I love all things Pink.” It was written in the style of P.D. Eastman’s, “Go, Dog, Go!”

Where do you recommend a new reader start in your backlist?

I always say the beginning, but I have a new beginning to the series. “No Perfect Beginning,” is the original story of one of the couples in the first two books of The IMPERFECTION Series. No Perfect Beginning has just been published in the Steamy Ever After collection, with Willow Winters, Samantha Cole, Lydia Michaels, Heather Slade, Mimi Flood, Michelle Windsor, Ellie Masters, and me!

Do you have a favorite/most memorable scene/ part in a novel you've written?

I do. It’s in my newest release “Bone Dust.” It’s a Rock Hills story. It releases September 5, and it has a woodsy scene that made me emotional. Second place: The end of No Perfect Time, and Third place: the love story in Boundless Hearts, that makes me believe true love never dies. <3

Is there a part of your career as an author you thought was going to be difficult but has wound up being really wonderful?

Meeting readers. I am a #1 Empath and I thought I would be taking in everyone’s feelings. I do, but it’s more a prompt to know when someone needs a hug, a shoulder, and even just a bottle of water. After signings, I need a day or two to decompress from all the electricity I feel.

Are there specific themes, tropes, or subgenres you’re more drawn to as an author, reader, or listener?

I love suspense, and I love romance. Merging them together is a joy.

What is your favorite part about being an author?

Having readers gain access to my worlds. My books have traveled to places I’ve not been. It’s an honor, and it’s mindblowing.

What do you like to read/listen to?

I listen to craft books.

Any favorite authors you want to send a shout-out to?

Aleatha Romig, Pam Godwin, and Pepper Winters for writing dark with the most eloquent prose. Samantha Cole, Shayla Black, Cherise Sinclair, and Kallypso Masters for opening my eyes to a world I didn’t know existed. A.L. Jackson, Mia Sheridan, Laylah Attar for writing books whose characters are now my imaginary friends. Their stories stay with me, and  finally, Lydia Michaels who is the ONLY person who could get me to read Amish Vampires.

Is there someone(s) who’s been influential in your life as it relates to your career?

My mom. Mothers and daughters can sometimes be oil and water, but when it comes to my stories, she’s loved every one of them.

How have your life experiences influenced your career as an author?

I’ve had many traumatic events in my life. Writing them into a story and assigning them a character is cathartic for me. I relive the experience, but I also get to work it out the way I would have wanted.
