Author Spotlight: Meg Fitz(patrick)
Your Distraction From Reality
Every so often my writery and non-writery worlds collide and someone who’s been part of one world becomes part of another. Usually it’s someone from Romancelandia becoming a close friend in real life who I travel with and do non-bookish family stuff with (I know, everything is bookish, but sometimes it’s not). Sometimes it’s someone from my non-bookish life becoming an avid reader and joining the ranks of Romancelandia fangirls with me. And even more rarely, someone from a completely non-bookish part of my life becomes an author in Romancelandia. And I get to work with them on a professional level. Which is really freaking cool.
And that’s exactly what happened with Meg Fitz. She started as a mom friend. Our kids hung out together, so we did. We share a similar sarcastic sense of humor, have frequent ADHD moments where conversations jump from topic to topic, appreciate a great pun, and are always up for sharing our new favorite read. But along the way she decided to take that reading enjoyment to writing her own stories. And she reached out to me about editing along that journey.
Meg started off writing YA (Young Adult) fiction, and already had one standalone story, Accidental Quarantine, out in the wilds of Vella when she started working on The Plans, her YA series. I was so excited to work with her on Best Laid Plans, but when time and obligations didn’t work out for books two and three, another editor stepped in to help her bring those books to completion.
Having seen that series through, she started moving into the spicier side, and Meg Fitzpatrick was born. Her next release, and first one under her new pen name is Shield and Savior, the first book in a brand new series that brings a fantastic combination of suspense and steam, humor and heart. We just completed edits and I am already ready to read it again. It’s mafia and bodyguard and romcom and single mom and so much snarky humor. It’s a fascinating blend of “holy hell, did that just happen?” and “I just snorked tea through my nose laughing.”
Since she’s launching a new series with her new pen name, and has big goals for Shield and Savior, Meg has also set up a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. And it’s chock full of all kinds of goodies from sprayed edge pages to NSFW artwork. It closes on Friday, January 12, 2024 at 8:30 PM EST, so if you want in, you better get cracking!
The other super fun thing about working with Meg has been getting to interact with her in person. Writing and editing are often such a solitary life. And as close and I am to many of the authors I edit for, we’re all scattered around the country, and in some cases the world. But Meg lives thirty minutes away. So we get to have lunch together and chat about all the things. Her enthusiasm is infectious, and face-to-face time is such a wonderful break in the screen time we both dedicate our lives to.
Meg is one of the Rising Stars authors signing at Charm City Romanticon this year, and I could not be prouder of her. Taking a dream and an idea to a page is one thing, bringing it to the table (literally) in your own backyard is pretty amazing.
